Job Description:

Job Title:  Artisan Fitter  
Site: Kansanshi Mining Plc  
Department: Smelter Engineering  
 Section: Mechanical, Acid Plant  
Position Reports To: Senior Supervisor – Mechanical  
Direct Reports:N/A 


Purpose: 

To install and maintain plant equipment including converters, chutes, and pipes according to drawings. Carry out steel fabrication/repair works, ensure the proper care and maintenance of allocated cutting, welding, and tools/equipment under the general guidance of the section’s supervisor/s.


Key Responsibilities:

- Adhere to all relevant requirements, policies, procedures, and legal regulations pertaining to health, safety, environment, and quality, as well as finance, human resources, and any other regulations as required by the company and relevant to the level of the role and responsibilities of the function.

- Perform Preventive and Corrective Maintenance activities on all Hot Metals (ISA, MSEF, WHB, ESP) Smelting equipment. Maintenance activities will include but not be limited to:

  - Perform routine and scheduled maintenance on mechanical equipment.

  - Conduct inspections to identify wear, tear, and potential failures.

  - Lubricate and clean machinery components.

  - Diagnose mechanical faults and implement effective repairs.

  - Replace or repair defective parts using hand tools and machinery.

  - Calibrate equipment to ensure optimal performance.

  - Assemble and install new machinery and equipment.

  - Ensure proper alignment and calibration of new installations.

  - Test newly installed equipment for proper functionality.

  - Adhere to safety protocols and regulations.

  - Use personal protective equipment (PPE) appropriately.

  - Participate in safety training and drills.

  - Maintain accurate records of maintenance and repairs.

  - Report any safety hazards or equipment issues to supervisors.

  - Document all modifications and upgrades performed on equipment.

  - Work closely with other maintenance team members and departments.

  - Communicate effectively with supervisors and engineers regarding technical issues.

  - Provide guidance and training to junior fitters and apprentices.

  - Respond promptly to emergency breakdowns and mechanical failures.

  - Perform quick and effective repairs to minimize downtime.

  - Assist in root cause analysis and implement corrective actions.


Qualifications:

- Minimum of a Grade 12.

- Craft Certificate or equivalent in Mechanical Fitting.

- EIZ Certification.


Experience: 

- Minimum 5 years’ experience in the maintenance of Smelting Plant Equipment or similar.

- Knowledge of procedures for routine inspection and maintenance.

- Knowledge of Hydraulic and Pneumatic circuitry of furnace electrode columns and tapping machines.

- Knowledge of the safety requirements when working on furnace tapping equipment, furnace launders, and furnace cooling water circuits.

- Knowledge of the associated equipment upstream and downstream of the primary smelting furnaces.

- A member of the Engineering Institution of Zambia (EIZ).
